Batik Braid Update - I can't believe I quilted this!! and a giveaway!

I'm about half way done with the quilting.  Oh, this is going to take a while. But I thought I'd share a little of the progress.  I am really liking it!!  I can't believe I quilted the free form feathers.  It just amazes me.  When I started the FMQ challenge, I could barely do one decent feather.  Three weeks later, lots of drawings and lots of practice and I was able to do this.   I do have to say that while I was doing this on my wonderful domestic machine, I kept thinking  "I really want a long arm".    My shoulders are a little tight, no matter how many times I told myself "drop your shoulders, relax the shoulders" it just didn't work for me. Seems as though my brain thinks hands when I say shoulders and my hands would go all limp.  I need to find some trick to get my shoulders to drop and relax.  I used a some of the left over layer cake on the back.  This is heavily quilted by I used bottom line on the top and bottom which is a nice thin thread so it's not all that stiff.  We'll see how it is after it gets washed.

Hope everyone is having a good week.  Have a happy memorial day.  Thanks to all those that served or have had to sacrifice for those that have.

The rain has stopped and just in time, heading over to a friends for a nice dinner!!

To celebrate my excitement on winning my first ever giveaway and finishing the Batik Braid quilt, I'm giving away the remains of the layer cake.  28 in total - two of each of those shown in the picture (sorry about the shadows on the pic).  These are Timeless Treasure Tonga Treats - Sugar Plum.  Actually I just don't really know what to do with layer cakes. So if you would like to win the Sugar Plum fabric, just leave a comment and let me know what you do with your layer cakes.  I really do want to know.  My random number picker (my husband) will activated on Wed evening.

  1. I think you ready for Paducah! I cannot beleave how fast you are with FMQ as well as the more intricate designs.

  2. Your feather look lovely. I admire anyone that quilts large quilts on a domestic machine. And you can get sore shoulders and back and arms with a long arm machine as well. Same thing - it is all about posture.

  3. The quilting is beautiful. I signed up for a FM feather class with Patsy Thompson. I hope my attempts look as wonderful.

I never bought a layer cake, so no idea what you do with them. I'd proably cut them into smaller pieces (that divided evenly into 12)and use them in blocks.

  8. I saw a beautiful layer cake pattern that called for pinwheels. Incorporate the layer cake fabrics with some coordinating solids and it would be a lovely quilt top. You did a lovely job with the quilting. I can't manage anything larger than a table runner on my regular sized sewing machhine, and salute you for completing this one. It's awesome.

  9. That is an amazing quilting job! Just beautiful!

I've got one layer cake that I'm going to cut into 2.5" squares and made into hexies. The other one I have is going to be cut up with some coordinating solids for an improv quilt.

  10. Beautiful feathers. You inspire me! I have never bought layer cakes. I love to make scrap quilts and I am sure that layer cakes would be great to add variety to my quilts.

  11. It's fabulous! I think maybe working in small time chunks with stretch breaks in between is the only remedy for the shoulders.

  12. You are amazing! My shoulders are starting to hurt just thinking about free motion quilting on a domestic sewing machine. I love those batiks too! The solid looking lavender really shows off your quilting so nicely!

  16. Beautiful quilt and fabulous quilting! I'd love to see what you could do with a longarm!!!!!

I just got a Twister ruler and it uses layer cakes, so that's what I'd use them for since that is the next quilt on my list!!!

  17. Great FMQ and what a beautiful quilt. If I had the layer cake I would consider doing another stack and whack quilt. (Not sure if that is the correct technical term!)

  19. I won a layer cake and my plan was to cut it into smaller rectangles (5x10 and 2.5x5) so it would be less obvious that it was originally a stack of 10" squares. A friend just cut her winning layer cake into wedges for a Dresden variation http://victoriarosequilts.blogspot.com/2011/05/christmas-candy-dishes.html
